Yankee Gas LNG Facilities
Waterbury, Connecticut

With the construction of a $108.3 million Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility in Waterbury, Connecticut, Yankee Gas Service Company (Yankee Gas) will be able to attain its overarching goals of superior and sustainable customer service while supporting local economic development and realizing significant cost recovery. As a result of this project, Yankee Gas’ 200,000 customers will be able to depend on increased supply reliability and price stability. Over the long-term, the project will decrease average gas rates while stimulating economic development for the 71 communities Yankee Gas serves.

S E A and Yankee Gas worked collaboratively through every step of this project from concept to facility commissioning. The Yankee Gas LNG Facility is unique, as it is the first full-containment tank constructed in the United States. The project team faced a multitude of challenges, from locating the facility site, obtaining regulatory approvals, maintaining community acceptance, ensuring the security of the facility, and meeting construction milestones. Although these hurdles posed significant threats to the completion of the project, the ultimate goal was achieved through S E A’s integral role as Owner’s Representative.

LNG, when converted back to natural gas, is the cleanest fossil fuel producing fewer of the harmful emissions that contribute to greenhouse gases. As demand for natural gas continues to grow, more LNG facilities will be needed nationwide. The design and permitting of this project provides a model for how these facilities can be built to meet environmental and safety concerns while allowing for flexibility in project siting.

Through an innovative technical design and engagement with the public, Yankee Gas’ LNG facility has been a success. The completed facility allows Yankee Gas to provide lower priced natural gas to its customers, attracts jobs and returns a contaminated brownsfield site to active use.
