Campus Materials Management and District Plan
Providence, RI
Brown University
Higher Education
With an urban campus in the historic College Hill neighborhood of Providence, Brown University encountered an array of logistical and aesthetic challenges when building or expanding beyond College Hill. The university desired an efficient campus circulation system that avoided conflicts with pedestrians.
Sustainable features
S E A’s materials management plan for the campus area resulted in a reduction of 35 percent of hard surfaces used by service and other vehicles. An essential aspect of the plan uses the natural topography to create pedestrian friendly “green roofs” atop below-grade servicing. The plan also minimizes truck and pedestrian conflict.
Client collaboration
S E A’s planning and design team worked with academic, facilities, and community representatives as well as building, landscape, civil, and structural consultants to support the university’s goals to gain consensus for project funding and regulatory approvals.
