Cambridge Fresh Pond Parkway

Sustainable features

The project is an important element of the Boston Harbor clean-up. Through the City's its sewer separation and stormwater management program, untreated sewage and other pollutants are kept out of area waterways. Additionally, this project facilitates the next phases of sewer separation in the upstream areas.

Client collaboration

S E A worked closely with the client to investigate the system and design for the City’s needs. We learned that sediment deposits had become a problem and were able to incorporate innovative self-cleaning features, including using saved water treatment plant water discharge and diverted rainfall run-off for periodic pipe cleaning.

Client results

Fresh Pond Parkway is an urban green space parkway and major commuter artery, carrying hundreds of cars per hour. S E A’s design minimized disruption for residents and commuters. Our design renewed some existing pipelines using trenchless technology, thus extending the service life of older combined sewers that were converted to separate sanitary sewers.
