Columbia University

Sustainable features

The campus is a pilot project for LEED Neighborhood Development. S E A is developing operational considerations to accommodate the University’s goals and LEED requirements for recycling, composting, and reduction of truck emissions. S E A is also supporting Columbia's LEED certification through Innovation In Design credits for materials management planning.

Client collaboration

S E A worked with end users to identify their space needs, including provisions for future sustainable initiatives. We worked with the project architects and university planners to layout a space program and operational guidelines that utilized the underground infrastructure to support phased development.

Client results

S E A's planning input provides for adequate and efficient campus services. The central service node and distribution network maximize the amount of space available for active ground floor uses, such as retail and restaurants; while reducing truck traffic, noise, exhaust, and pedestrian interference.
