Manhattanville Campus Development
Higher Education
Columbia University's new campus in Manhattanville needed a contiguous underground distribution network for goods and services in order to create a safe, green, and attractive ground plane. S E A provided programming and design to address service support spaces, storage requirements, and loading docks.
Sustainable features
The campus is a pilot project for LEED Neighborhood Development. S E A is developing operational considerations to accommodate the University’s goals and LEED requirements for recycling, composting, and reduction of truck emissions. S E A is also supporting Columbia's LEED certification through Innovation In Design credits for materials management planning.
Client collaboration
S E A worked with end users to identify their space needs, including provisions for future sustainable initiatives. We worked with the project architects and university planners to layout a space program and operational guidelines that utilized the underground infrastructure to support phased development.
