Stations & Parking for Bus Rapid Transit System
New Britain & Hartford, CT
CT Department of Transportation
Transportation
S E A is designing 10 stations along a 9.4 mile bus-way with parking facilities for a new $400 million Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line between New Britain and Hartford, Connecticut. The first of its kind in the State of Connecticut, the bus-way will run along active and inactive railroad rights-of-way through 4 municipalities.
Sustainable features
The New Britain to Hartford Bus Rapid Transit Project was selected as the preferred alternative to the Connecticut DOT’s Hartford West Major Investment Study. The study showed that adding lanes to I-84 would not be reasonable due to cost, environmental impacts, and public opposition. The bus-way will offer motorists a public transportation alternative, reduce roadway congestion along I-84 and parallel arteries, and improve the region's air quality by reducing single occupancy vehicles.
Client collaboration
S E A’s multi-discipline team is working collaboratively with CTDOT and all corridor stakeholders to develop stations and sites that fit within the communities they serve, while creating an identifiable branding for CTDOT’s first bus rapid transit project. S E A & CTDOT conducted a series of interactive community workshops to gather stakeholders input, improve the station designs, and keep the communities informed as the project progresses.
