Lifeguard Station
Salisbury Beach State Reservation-Salisbury, MA
Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR)
Fed/State/Mil
The pavilion at Salisbury Beach State Reservation was a dilapidated two-story concrete structure dating back to the 1950s. Serving as a first aid station and lifeguard staging area, the DCR hoped to replace it with a less obtrusive structure that would continue accommodating both functions.

Sustainable features
Adjacent to the primary dune of a barrier beach, S E A’s design aided in the restoration and protection of the site. The new structure’s diminished scale and “light touch” on the land allows the dune to naturally migrate, thus increasing its protective function. Establishment of dune vegetation is promoted, resulting in enhanced beach stabilization.
Client collaboration
S E A worked with DCR staff tailoring the project scope to meet a limited budget and tight time-frame for demolition and construction of the new structure. S E A provided architectural, planning, deconstruction, structural, civil, and geotechnical services as well as project management.
