This project considered the development of Preliminary Plans and Environmental Documents for reconstruction of nine miles of U.S. Route 302 in the towns of Bath, Landaff, and Lisbon, New Hampshire. The project involved the following elements: coordinating the engineering layout of taking into account physical, natural, and cultural constraints, including the cost of the improvements; finding solutions to the environmental issues; public participation and agency coordination in the evaluation and selection of the proposed alternatives and documentation of the study process and the basis for decision making. The team conducted a systematic and multi-disciplinary approach to develop a Preliminary Design that: satisfied current and future needs of the communities and traveling public; satisfied the engineering design criteria for the project and was able to receive necessary permits through environmental compliance; received local support; and could be constructed at an acceptable cost.
