Central Artery/Third Artery Tunnel
Boston, Massachusetts

S E A completed the design of the utilities relocation from the Sumner Tunnel to North Station (Causeway to North Streets) to allow for the construction of the depressed Central Artery. This complex project required communication and coordination with 7 agencies, 9 utility companies, and 11 adjacent design contracts. S E A worked closely with the City's Traffic Department to product detouring and traffic plans to address construction needs while maintaining vehicular and pedestrian traffic through this sensitive area. The design included slurry wall sections for future underpinning of the existing overhead artery, penetrations for early utility relocations, and consideration for final utility locations. The utilities relocation included sewers, water mains, drainage, natural gas, electric, telephone, MBTA conduits and CATV conduits. All utilities within the tunnel alignment were designed with special materials, joints and undercarriage support systems to accommodate aerial suspension of the utilities while the tunnel construction is in progress.
