As part of the design team, S E A Consultants designed the highway approach for this Crossing between Prospect and Verona Island near Bucksport, Maine. When the bridge's cables were found to be deteriorated beyond expectations during the summer of 2003, the bridge was posted for 12 tons, and a decision was made to replace the bridge. The project included a significant rock cut resulting in up to 100 feet of rock face, design of an intersection, and maintenance of traffic using a 50 ft high retaining wall. S E A coordinated closely with the project team to determine right-of-way impacts and environmental permitting requirements, and assisted in submittal of the US Coast Guard Permit. Due to time constraints and the complexity of the required design, a modified design/bid/build process was chosen to deliver the project. The compressed schedule will result in the new bridge being open to traffic only three years after posting the existing bridge.
